SPRING/18

Adding exquisite finishing touches to a capital lifestyle

At the end of May, Rigby & Rigby’s ambitious, eighteen-month long 100th project was completed on schedule and on budget, and was handed over to the client.

The project, to transform an elegant Grade II listed house into a spacious, contemporary and light-filled home, includes the creation of a large basement extension with gym, pool and entertainment space and the complete and careful refurbishment of the original Grade II listed home.

After eighteen months, the finished home is now emerging from the scaffolding; revealing exceptional levels of detail, smart technology and exquisite beauty – designed to create an inviting, exciting and ergonomically satisfying home for the client family.

Ahead of the handover, Rigby & Rigby held a site visit with DSA Group and Savills – who worked on the planning phase of the project to reveal how the concept design they helped to create has been realised into this exciting, intelligent and remarkable family home.

Designed around the needs, vision and lifestyle of the Scandinavian client family, the imaginative design floods the contemporary spaces with light, whilst specialist joiners, plasterers and heritage consultants have breathed new life into the property’s original balustrades, flooring and cornicing – creating a seamless transition between the heritage and contemporary architectural styles.

This transition is perhaps nowhere better illustrated than the expansive galleried landing and staircase which descends from the ground floor towards the lower ground open plan living space, overlooking the formal garden. The traditional architecture of the original home gives way to dramatic contemporary design, creating an enjoyable, light-filled living space which delivers for the needs of the whole family and forms the very heart of the home. The staircase itself has been designed with timber treads, clad in Filetto stone, with an exquisite bronze balustrade – affording an elegant and timeless flow between the old and the new.

The interiors reflect the clean, crisp and neutral style preferences of the client family; with bespoke, hand-finished, fitted joinery and stunning works of art, chosen by the client from a selection of original works curated in collaboration with Rigby & Rigby’s interior specialists. As befitting a family home, there are personal touches everywhere – a tiny snug hidden under the staircase, complete with chairs for the children; family photographs and a cherished teddy, ready to welcome the family home.

Outside, the finishing touches are also being applied to the property’s two main gardens. Award winning landscape garden designer Kate Gould has designed both a formal garden and a secluded, walled children’s garden, accessed from the playroom and complete with a tiny, cedar tile-clad, wooden playhouse – for the client’s young family to enjoy.

The design of the formal garden is simple and elegant, in a contemporary classical style, once again reflecting the client’s tastes and personality. Outdoor entertainment and dining spaces and a beautiful lawned area, framed by mature trees and accessed by 4.4 metre-high automated Skyframe glass doors, create an exciting extension to the living space.

The Rigby & Rigby team has worked hard to make the home as simple as possible. Doors, windows and blinds are all fully automated and, along with the heating, lighting, Sonos wireless home sound and security systems, are operated by any Apple device.

In this property, the tech talks to each other – so the family doesn’t have to use multiple applications, just one, user friendly interface – the Lutron Home Control app – that will make living in the property as easy and enjoyable as possible.
